Austin, Texas (October 8, 2021) — The Texas Public Employees Association (TPEA), the largest nonpartisan association for active and retired Texas state employees, recently honored Texas Senator Charles Schwertner with an award for providing valuable support in restoring the Employees Retirement System (ERS) pension fund.
“Senator Schwertner’s support was vital in tackling the pension fund debt,” said Executive Director Ann Bishop. “We are thankful to Senator Schwertner for ensuring that the over 26,000 essential Texas employees and retirees of his district and of the entire state maintain their well-deserved pensions.”
“Senate District 5 is home to the second-highest population of state employees and retirees, and I am happy to have helped ensure their pensions are financially sound and will be secure into the future,” said Senator Schwertner.
TPEA was instrumental in the creation of the ERS pension fund and health insurance for state employees and retirees. Most recently, the association lobbied for the additional monies necessary to both address an almost $15B debt and move the ERS pension fund toward actuarial soundness.
