Why the ERS Sunset Review Is Important to Watch

For the first time in two decades, the Employees Retirement System (ERS) will undergo a Sunset review by the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission. The Sunset process allows the Legislature to examine how the agency can operate more efficiently. (The Sunset Commission’s website offers a good explanation of the process.) The Sunset review process is open and transparent, and TPEA will work closely with both Sunset staff and ERS staff to add the state employee perspective to the conversation.
Because ERS provides all employee benefits, Sunset review is important for active and retired state employees to watch. The legislation developed from an agency’s Sunset review often provides an opportunity for attempts to make radical change to processes and systems. TPEA is closely monitoring the ERS Sunset process and will convey any concerns and priorities regarding policy proposals to you.
