Nov. 3 Election Preview: Don't Forget to Vote

September 29, 2015

Texans will vote on seven proposed constitutional amendments this coming Election Day (Nov. 3). If you aren’t yet registered to vote, the deadline to do so is Oct. 5. (Check whether you’re registered and print a voter registration application at www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/.) Early voting will occur Oct. 19–30.

One amendment of particular interest is Proposition 1, which would increase the homestead property tax exemption. Currently the exemption is set at $15,000. Passage of Proposition 1 would increase this mandatory property tax exemption to $25,000. The amendment would also enact an associated reduction in the taxable value of homesteads owned by the elderly or disabled. Proponents of this amendment say this exemption increase would especially benefit both moderate income homeowners and first-home buyers on the cusp of qualifying for a mortgage.
